Have people seen this: h**p://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/10/google-searchwiki.html ? It seems to be mainstream now (at least it is showing up for me). It seems like voting on internet sites... I realize that it only affects your search but what good would that info be used for is not for google to further try to provide people with the best sites... it seems really open to abuse if that's what the are going for... I don't know... the project is probably at the early stages, and would have a small effect if any on search results now... but in the future who knows... it's almost like peer edited... someone keen should set up an experiment

I just noticed it last night as well. Not sure what is going on with it or if it is cookie driven for your account only.

Looks interesting though...makes me wonder if G is giving some preference to votes?

Well, just read the thread and comments on it. Take it for what it's worth but Matt Cutts says it only favors your rankings and doesn't affect the general population rankings:

Yeah I see him saying that... if they said it had an effect it would ruin the system as people would try to game it... I can't imagine if they have a real quality assessment mechanism (ie. people actually do it honestly) that they wouldn't use it, at least in the future.

They might be able to apply it in partial ranking to the overall ranking of a site. I'm sure they would closely build in some system to check who ranks it, IP addy or some other way to track it so that the spammers don't hammer their sites...

Not that I would be a spammer, but...
