I'm seeing Squidoo in a whole new light now. It could very well be one of the better ways of funneling targeted traffic to your website. Here's what I've noticed:

Just have one or two lenses is better than none, but it's whole interlinking and ranking system creates some unbelievable potential for traffic. I'm trying out a system.

I have two primary lenses, one for each of my fully functioning websites: Honest Way and Alternative Cures. Each main lens focuses on it's complimenting website.

Now go to the next step down. Create several specialised lenses for each main lens linking them to the primary lens but not backwards. Do whatever is necessary to promote the secondary lenses which in turn will focus on the primary lens. Theory is that will boost the primary lens's ranking, popularity and traffic, which will then be funneled to the main website.

Viola - free targeted traffic generation!

The hard part is promoting the secondary lenses.

More theory... create third generation lenses to focus on each secondary lens... oh the mind boggles at the possibilities!

Now how much time did I say I needed to do all this? If I don't sleep at all for a couple of weeks, I might be able to do this... skip eating too, that'll give me the odd half hour here and there to do some more writing...

I'll end up in our gobbledygook thread permanently at that rate unable to type anything coherent!

I did some updating with my lenses and joined a thread over at whydowork and a couple of members there rated my lenses. Maybe that has done the trick, I'm not sure, or maybe it's all the new content I've been adding.

Anyway, I logged into Squidoo today and got a pleasant surprise. I was bemoaning that fact that I couldn't get any of my lenses ranked below 10,000 and now look at this:

1. honestway: ......... 4,618
2. greentealeaves: .. 4,805
3. alt-cures: ............ 6,392
4. hypnosisworks: ... 9,489
5. onestop: ............. 11,152
6. plantsforhealth: ... 11,864
7. smokenomore: .... 20,832 (my newest!)

They're all getting more visitors than before too! 8)

Great going Terry. There is so much new and exciting happening here. I am getting back home (this forum) soon and check out all the typos.

I'd better keep on my toes then!

I checked squidoo again today (ok, I'm going to be doing that EVERY day now) and the ranks improved again! Here they are:

1. greentealeaves: .. 3,111
2. honestway: ......... 3,384
3. plantsforhealth: ... 4,570
4. onestop: ............. 5,891
5. hypnosisworks: ... 5,892
6. alt-cures: ............ 6,775
7. smokenomore: .... 18,804

It's strange how they keep changing places with one another too - and how that green tea lens has beaten all the others! It's ranked #266 in health and medicine - that's unbelievably good for a lens that has only been in existence for a few days!

And I made an indirect sale from it as a clickout from there went to my alt-cures site and bought one of my affiliate ebooks!

Now I'm waiting for a direct sale...

Interestingly, some of the clickouts have gone to clickank aff links but no sales - that tells me that MY ad coipy was good enough to get them to the author's sites, but THEIR ad copy wasn't good enough to clinch the sale. Or maybe the price was too high (more likely).

The only way is UP! 8)

This gets better. Here's today's figures and the new lens at the bottom:

1. onestop: ............. 3,173
2. greentealeaves: .. 3,489
3. honestway: ......... 4,056
4. alt-cures: ............ 4,534
5. plantsforhealth: ... 4,934
6. hypnosisworks: ... 6,416
7. smokenomore: .... 9,014
8. inyourfood: ......... 25,786

Strange how the most unlikely lens, ie the blatant affiliate promo for My One Stop has beaten all the rest in rank! I wish I knew how they rated the lenses exactly, because if it goes by visits and star ratings, the greentealeaves lens should come out on top every time. Very strange.

But good, because the overall ratings have improved again on yesterday.

Well it looks like the spammers have given Squidoo a rough ride thanks to their selfishness and low tactics. One guy managed to create 400 lenses all on exactly the same subject in one day - that's going some! Shame it was all about porn - this guy could earn himself some decent honest cash putting those skill to work in the right way.

What a waste of talent. Bloody porn spammers!

The upshot of that was google slapping squidoo down hard by dropping its PR and making life difficult for everybody. Ain't it just the way of life - a few bad apples spoil the whole barrel!

Here's a link to the latest blog entry from Seth Godin about it.

http://www.squidoo.com/blog/?p=158

Hopefully this will be a temporary setback and things will get back to normal soon!

Won't these spammers ever give up? I wonder why they even waste their time, knowing very well that it's not going to be long before they are caught.

Terry, those stats are crazy. What did you do with that 'inyourfood' lens? I am really proud of the way you handle these things. You go at them with a vengeance and make sure you achieve what you set out to.

Congrats on that..it's kind of exciting to keep track of your stats...I do you know.. 8) .

Thanks Usha, it's nice knowing someone is taking such an interest in what I'm doing. It makes it all the more worthwhile, especially as I know you are also (probably) gaining some benefit from my haphazard and "trial and error" approach to things!

It's how I learned to play guitar well. As a teenager, I used to go to bars and watch bands playing and always kept an eye on what each musician was doing - especially the guitarist as it was my chosen instrument. By watching and copying I learned many things that I would never have from a book, although I still needed those books to give me the basic building blocks.

But watching people do it for real was the only way of learning some of those tricks and clever techniques that I still use myself today.

When I teach guitar or bass guitar at the local music school, in may ways I'm a terrible teacher because I tell the kids to leave their books behind when they come to my lesson. That's because I want them to look and learn just as I did and hopefully they'll gain something more than books alone can teach them.

After all, there are other teachers that will work those kids through the books, so my meanderings and off the wall methods might just produce some really original musicians!

Maybe that approach is not so good when it comes to IM as mistakes can be costly, but I do try to follow the methods and teachings of the successful people...

At least before I try something that will probably bring the whole lot crashing down on my head!

...I'm terrible! I was going to tell you how I got those ratings down so low and so fast but I went off on one of my famous tangents yet again!

I'll start a new thread with that as I think it deserves its own...

Yes Terry, I do learn a lot from your posts. What I like about you is the fact that you are totally willing to share. Let me tell you, most people wouldn't, in fear of having more competition. But that's because they don't see the big picture and their thoughts narrow their vision.

I am motivated as hell to start working on my own lenses. Just waiting for the days to get longer.

You are not so terrible...just a little :P

A little terrible I can live with!

Here's the lens stats for today:

1. honestway: ......... 2,628 ... (2,885)
2. greentealeaves: .. 3,071 ... (3,854)
3. alt-cures: ............ 3,835 ... (5,192)
4. plantsforhealth: ... 4,227 ... (2,497)
5. onestop: ............. 4,311 ... (4,296)
6. hypnosisworks: .... 5,481 ... (6,911)
7. inyourfood: ......... 5,887 ... (10,340)
8. smokenomore: .... 8,901 ... (6,668)

An added little statistician's delight is yesterday's figures in brackets!

Now you can see at a glance which lens is going up and which is sliding down. More's the point, so can I so I know which lenses need a boost.

The good news is that they are ALL ranked below 10,000. Must be time to add another lens!

Footnote: The Honest Way lens is ranked at #86 in the SEO & Affiliate Marketing category. That's some going!

After updating every single lens yesterday - some with a fair bit of good, new content, I was a little disappointed that none of them broke under the 2,000 barrier - and in fact they all lost a little ground.

Here are the stats for today:

1. honestway: ......... 3,026 ... (2,628)
2. greentealeaves: .. 3,335 ... (3,071)
3. alt-cures: ............ 4,304 ... (3,835)
4. plantsforhealth: ... 4,477 ... (4,227)
5. onestop: ............. 5,007 ... (4,311)
6. hypnosisworks: .... 5,702 ... (5,481)
7. inyourfood: ......... 6,081 ... (5,887)
8. smokenomore: .... 9,426 ... (8,901)

Strange, they all kept the same positions as yesterday! I'll update them all again today and see what happens...

Hey Terry,

I have been following your squidoo progress but was too pressured for time to comment on here before in the last week.

It's great to see how you power ahead with your lenses. I must admit I lost a bit of "hum" last week due to work and haven't managed to update any of my lenses yet. So naturally they all went down hill. :D Yours are positioned great and judging by the great content they are of great value. I haven't rated them yet and haven't commented either as keeping up with the have' to's is a challenge at the very moment. Hopefully by tomorrow it will get a bit easier and I might steal some time to work on squidoo again.

As you say, it is sooo addictive and can be a great time waster too. But if it brings you links back to your sites and even sales then it is worth it I think.

Hint: you can update your lenses by updating one keyword only! It counts and saves you heaps of time.

Monika :D

Thanks Monika, but don't worry if you're pressed for time - I know how it feels! I've had a respite from the day job for the last couple of days and can't believe how much I've caught up on.

You have to do what you have to do and that's all there is to it! :?

Now, down to squidoo business. I still marvel at the strangeness of its ranking system. I did a little experiment yesterday - and only updated The Honest Way lens with a simple "publish" as I'd already updated my blog, so the RSS feed picked up the new content.

Now, I would have expected The Honest Way to have stayed at the top of all the lenses and maybe even get a better rank than yesterday, while the others should have all slipped a bit.

This is how they ended up:

1. honestway: ......... 1,849 ... (3,026)
2. greentealeaves: .. 1,975 ... (3,335)
3. alt-cures: ............ 2,907 ... (4,304)
4. plantsforhealth: ... 3,149 ... (4,477)
5. inyourfood: ......... 3,821 ... (6,081)
6. hypnosisworks: .... 4,025 ... (5,702)
7. onestop: ............. 4,026 ... (5,007)
8. smokenomore: .... 6,278 ... (9,426)

Well! So Honest Way broke the 2,000 barrier and stayed top as expected. It also gained within it's section to claim #69 in SEO & MArketing. Whoo!

But the others all gained too - green Tea Leaves also broke the 2,000 barrier which surprised me.

So that begs the question. Does Squidoo ranking improve following an addition to content? From this evidence, yes and no. I noticed that a new visitor to Honest Way had signed my guest book and rated the lens 5 stars. I think that has more weight than adding content and updating alone.

Although that wasn't the case with Green Tea Leaves. So why did that shoot up in the ratings?

Here's my thoughts on this:

The trick, then, to climb the squidoo ladder is to get plenty of people to view the lens and to rate it highly - and the only way to do that, I believe, is to have lots of good, up-to-date, interesting and useful content in place before you start promoting the lens all over the place. Then when you've tempted some visitors to take a look, they'll be impressed enough to rate it, sign it and return to it (and tell their friends about it too).

Monika, without seeing your forthcoming book I'm probably only taking an educated guess at this, so am I getting warm? 8)

Here's the stats for Tuesday - lucky I caught them in time before they changed over for today (one advantage of being 6 hours ahead of the US) - I'll post yesterday's later.

1. honestway: ......... 1,728 ... (1,849)
2. greentealeaves: .. 2,364 ... (1,975)
3. alt-cures: ............ 3,377 ... (2,907)
4. plantsforhealth: ... 3,708 ... (3,149)
5. hypnosisworks: .... 4,071 ... (4,025)
6. onestop: ............. 4,073 ... (4,026)
7. inyourfood: ......... 4,285 ... (3,821)
8. smokenomore: .... 7,338 ... (6,278)

My experiment seems to bear one thing out. If you don't update the lenses, they will drop in ranking. I only updated Honest Way and it gained some ground, while the others all dropped slightly. I'll update them all today and see what the stats are later.

BTW if anyone wants to look at the actual lenses (and maybe sign my guestbooks and rate them for me) the full url is www.squidoo.com/ ... followed by the name above.

Terry,

What do these results mean? Does frequent updating mean, on a daily basis?

I was meaning to post comments and rate your lenses...just didn't get down to doing it. The reason being, I wanted to take time checking out your lenses so that I learn how they need to be done.

Will do that this weekend.

I am curious and waiting to see the results after you update your lenses.

The results are simply the popularity ratings of each lens from within squidoo.

A higher popularity ranking doesn't guarantee anything, but will potentially result in more visitors because people are curious to see why a lens is so highly rated. Guess what more visitors equals?

Updating lenses is time consuming, but I think it's a necessary task. I try to add new content to lenses as often as possible. Knowing the right frequency is difficult to gauge but I think that every other day should be plenty to keep the rankings high.

It doesn't have to be a big update either. One simple way to update a lens is to have an RSS feed from you blog encoded on it (you'll see I have done that). Then update your blog often (which should be done anyway). Each time you update your blog, go and publish each lens that has an RSS feed to it.

Voila, Squidoo accepts the RSS feed as new content and the lens is considered updated, even though you didn't actually write anything on it.

Another way, as Monika mentioned is to simply add or alter a keyword on a lens then hit the publish button. That is also considered updated.

It helps to start with a well populated lens. This is what took up so much of my time last week, building new lenses and writing content for each one of them. Now they are all quite healthily full of content, so I can take my foot off the gas a bit and only add the odd text module every so often - maybe once a week.

Another sneaky way I have discovered of updating a lens with good, quality relevant content (that I wrote) is to post...

Hang on! That's my secret - if you want to find out what it is, you'll have to read my Honest Way lens to find out - you'll know what I've done when you see it.

But don't tell everyone that little secret or they'll all be doing it! 8)
