Any Ideas?

Postby jaggerstone » Thu Jul 10, 2008 8:07 pm

I'm trying to help a friend of mine locally with SEO for his website. He runs a clinic for behavorial medicine, depression, anxiety, substance abuse..etc.
He wants more traffic locally and here is the problem: The releated keywords for his field are so broad that it is difficult to find one keyword locally that would be worth optimizing his site for using the city name.

Obvioulsly people look for these services but how do you get local traffic when each keyword, and there are many to choose from, gets maybe two to three searches a day locally?

I suggested starting a blog since blogs lend themselves naturally to being updated frequently and it is easy to rank for many different long tailed keywords but he would rather the visitors come to his site. But making a static website that is not updated frequently optimized for many different keywords would be a terrible read and unprofessional.

Any ideas???

Your backlinks are going to be really important here (sound familiar?). The names of the conditions treated, or the services offered, by your friend's clinic combined with the city name are likely not highly competitive keyword phrases depending on the size of your city. With keyword relevant backlinks from sites with trusted authority you should not have too much trouble rising to the top of the SERPs.

You have an advantage in your situation in that you can likely get very good links to your site from trusted authorities simply by asking. Any non profit website specializing in a specific treatment or condition would be inclined to include a link to where their visitors can go to get help locally. Many of these sites already have a dedicated space for this. As your friend's site clearly provides information about a legitimate service and he is not strictly trying to make money from the traffic, you should have much less problems getting these links than if you were asking for a link to your viagra affiliate site. The sites you would be getting links from would be relevant and likely high PR given their nature. Don't forget city directories, chamber of commerce pages, other local bloggers etc. All great link sources.

You can still do a great deal to optimize your on page SEO. Make proper use of your title tags and be sure to use your keywords as appropriate. Your friend could still add a blog to his existing site, but call it a column or newsletter or something. It would be an opportunity to beef up the content and frequency of updates as you mentioned. It would also give visitors an opportunity to get to know the "person" behind the clinic. Sufferers of those conditions value knowing that they can trust the proprietor. Furthermore he may enjoy it.

There are few ways I think your could approach it. For the home page, you could determine the highest volume keywords and focus on them. Or you could simply not target the home page for a specific keyword and just target keywords with pages.

When working local keywords, you can't expect to get large numbers because it is highly targeted and the demographic is very small. You can increase the traffic by dominating the SERPs for more keywords. Each keyword gets a few searches a day, but if you dominate 30 local keywords, you'll be able to increase your traffic. There is a limit to the amount of traffic you'll get working local terms though. You could get more traffic by working more general terms, but then the traffic won't be as targeted. Its not about number of visitors, but number of conversions.

I actually wrote a post today about semantics (before I saw this). Google understands the relationship between all the various keywords related to this site. If you gain authority for some, you will automatically gain authority for the others. And as you gain authority for your local area, you'll easily be able to dominate other keywords locally. Like Make Money authority will make ranking for other Make Money long tails much easier.

To point out semantics. My blog's focus is on the term Nashville SEO. I include it and and Internet Marketing in my title. I rank well for stuff like "Nashville Online Marketing" , "Nashville Web SEO", "Nashville Link Building", even though I don't mention those phrase specifically on my home page. I have authority for Nashville SEO, so I easily earn rankings for semantically related keywords, even without working the anchor text or even mentioning the phrase. Not the best example, because the site is new, but I hope that helps explain.

If the business has a physical location, list it with local google, yahoo, and msn business listings. Also, include the city name and state on every page. You can also include the phone number and area code. Google is smart enough to read these and determine a geographical location.

Lastly, you'll want to work authority in two ways. You want to work the traditional keyword authority like always by getting keyword anchored links. I also believe there is a level of local authority too. So gaining links from sources that have city specific authority will also be helpful.

Thanks for the info guys; much appreciated!!! He and I are working on a plan that involves some of your suggestions.

seozombie, you and I are in the same neck of the woods, about 200 miles as the crow flies! I haven't been to the capital city in awhile, love it over there though and once my son and daughter are grown, I will be moving about half way between here and there on the Tennessee river!!

Cheers and thanks again guys.
