Awstats vs. Statcounter: important differences?

Just wondering why Awstats and Statcounter seem to have very different interpretations of hits on my site and also show different backlinks.

Many of the backlinks that show up on Awstats do not show up anywhere else. Furthermore, Awstats will show a backlink for one month only, then it disappears.

Anybody have more information/feedback on this subject?

Statscounter is a javascript that runs on your visitors machine. If your visitor has javascript disabled, then you don't see a record of their visit in Statscounter. Certain robots or automated hits to your site won't show up in Statscounter either because they don't trigger the javascript.

Thanks for the reply - what about the difference in backlinks that show up with Awstats vs. other means?

A backlink generally means a link from another site to yours. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by backlinks showing up in Awstats.
