Google comes clean - sort of...

I got an email linking to this article the other day and thought I would share it with you: after almost a year of reading Grizzly's (and others) insights on how to make money online, this article about Google answering some very relevant questions was quite intriquing.

That was an interesting read. I guess a lot of it was what we already knew or suspected. I wasn't the least surprised about the answer concerning article submissions.

I was a bit confused when they were talking about using rank checking software getting your IP address banned though.

Were they talking about using web-based software to check the ranks of other sites?
Or PC based software (like SEO Elite)?
Or browser based software like the Forefox plugin or google toolbar?

Or none of these?

Mmmm... anyone know?

They probably mean tools like SEO Elite, Fast Blog Finder, SEOQuake etc. that scrape PR and indexing information.

I'm not sure which rank checking software they are talking about, but here is my take on it. If I use my SEOQuake software too much, or SEO-Elite, or even Keyword Elite to often during the day, if I attempt to try to use a regular Google search, it throws up an error about my query looking like an automated request. It pretty much blocks me, sometimes as much as a whole day.

I'm not sure if they would block a single IP address like my own ISP addy permanently, but I'm sure they could if they felt I was truly abusing it.

This makes me wonder if they are talking about server side requests? I know of a few programs that are less than **honest** that would be prime candidates for getting an IP addy blocked permanently...

I have been blocked on many occasions by google for doing searches for rankings with different web based programs ( Free monitor for google comes to mind for acouple of those). I think google is not quick to permanently block an IP address but is quick to temporarily block you depending on the 'offense' - my own past experience is getting blocked by the big G because of my repeated quick searches on their search engine for various keywords: and this was just me doing manual search at a fast rate, with no other software involved.

How do you know it is google blocking you and not the web based site?

It would pop up a box if I was using Keyword Elite or if I was trying to use Firefox with SEOQuake, I would get errors on my SEOQuake toolbar.

Another good sign is if you try to do a manual search on Google, it will pop up an error box, either requesting you complete a CAPTCHA or tell you that it will not complete the search.
